Christmas Event 2019

For this year’s Christmas event, we met in Thun early in the morning of Friday, 20 December. We were excited – as we are every year – to find out where we were going.

After a long bus ride we reached our destination above Muotathal. There, we were fitted out with helmets, head torches, boots, caving gloves and caving suits, just like real cave explorers. Then we descended into the huge Hölloch cave system. Known to be more than 200 kilometres in length, the Hölloch is one of the largest caves in the world. Steps were added to the area near the cave entrance about 100 years ago.

But we soon had to move forwards on all fours and crawl through really narrow spaces.

A candlelit cave raclette provided an atmospheric conclusion to this interesting excursion.

Later on in the afternoon, we visited the Etter distillery in Zug.

After a tour of the distillery and a peek behind the scenes, we were able to taste the various fruit brandies.

Suitably fortified, we went into the town, where we were served an aperitif in the Zug Skylounge with its spectacular views. We then enjoyed an evening meal in the traditional Aklin restaurant. We rounded off the evening on a relaxed note, and then, on the following day, we made for home.
